Phi Phi Islands are located about 20 kilometers southeast of Phuket, Thailand. They consist of two main sister islands—the larger Phi Phi Don in the north and the smaller Phi Phi Leh in the south—and were designated as a national park in 1983.
Blessed with abundant sunshine, soft white sandy beaches, calm turquoise waters, spectacular natural caves, and unspoiled scenery, the Phi Phi Islands stand out among more than 30 surrounding islands near Phuket, becoming one of the most popular holiday destinations in recent years.
Best Season: November to May is the best time to visit the Phi Phi Islands. The islands are hot year-round and are influenced by the monsoon, resulting in only two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. From November to May, it is the dry season, during which the islands are largely unaffected by rainfall, the seawater is especially clear, and the overall climate feels cooler and more comfortable.
Even during the off-peak season, as long as it is not raining, activities such as diving and swimming are still possible, though it may feel more humid. However, during the rainy season from May to September, heavy rain can diminish the enjoyment of island activities. Therefore, it is essential to check the weather forecast before heading to the islands.
Maya Bay is located on the southwest side of Phi Phi Leh. The entire island is dominated by steep limestone cliffs, with very few sandy beaches, which makes the beach at Maya Bay especially striking. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the beach is small but brilliantly white, while towering cliffs hundreds of meters high rise around it, resembling a giant hand protecting the bay. The water is crystal blue, and delicate palm trees line the shore, creating a classic tropical island atmosphere that is ideal for sightseeing and snorkeling.
This small bay is enclosed on three sides by cliffs rising up to 100 meters, with only a narrow opening to the sea, giving it a secluded, almost otherworldly feel. The bay gained worldwide fame after serving as a filming location for the movie The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, turning this once-hidden paradise into a globally renowned destination.
